How Search Engines Work and What to do to Rank Well?
Hello Everyone,
Do you want to rank up your blog on search engines? If so, you must have to have some knowledge about: How search engines work? So lets start learning.
The process, how search engines work can be explained into three steps:
STEP 1: Crawling
STEP 2: Indexing
STEP 3: Serving Result
Crawling: The process how search engines discover
the new (updated) pages is crawling. Crawling is a process run by a computer software program. This program send out search engine bots (also know as crawler, robot). It visits from link to link and find out the updated pages.
It is the big question, from where crawler start crawling? The crawler firstly target mazor directories like DMOZ, then Social Bookmarking sites like Digg, then previously indexed pages, and then submitted sitemap.
Indexing: Search Engine Bot while crawling a site if they find any new or updated content, they will search for meta tags to get proper direction. Then it will read the text’s and store it to the database. This process is called indexing.
Serving Result: When we make query on search engine to find out any information we need, it returns with a list of webpages, that is relevant with the searched keyword(s). This process takes only a few seconds to perform, but to do itsearch engines have to do a lot of works. It analyzes the whole database and make a list of relevant results.
This is the process, how search engines work and now it is time to review what we learned and to make a list of what to do rank up your blog on search engines?
What lesson we learned and what to do?
- The first things we learned in the lesson crawling, “The best way to find your blog(s) or webpages for search engines is HTML Link.”

What to do: Look at the above image, think that a is the home page of your blog and B and E are two pages linked with your homepage, so Google can easily crawl your page B and E. But C and D is not linked from any where so it is not possible to find out your pages (C and D) forSearch engines. So, when you publish a new page, always connect it with your blog with HTML link.
I use wordpress as my blogging software and use Google xml sitemap plugin to generate the sitemap and to notify search engines about the update.
Thanks to wordpress for it’s structure and to put my updated content at the top, so when search bots come to visit my blog, it gets the updated content first and be happy to index it.
But if you create any page and don’t want to appear it on your navigation menu, but want to appear on Search Engine Result Page (SERP), link it internally to make it easy to find out for search bots. You can do it by linking from other post’s or from sidebar or footer.
- The lesson we learned from the step indexing, “After arriving to your blog, the bot will search for appropriate meta tag“
The words written as meta title will be appeared as title to search engines. You learn more about title by reading this post: Writing tips: how to write an effective title?
